Sweat Rate Testing for Fight Camp: The 60-Minute Protocol That Actually Tells You What the Fighter Loses

Ask a fight team what their athlete’s sweat rate is and you will get one of three answers. The honest one is “I don’t know.” The hopeful one is “a lot, he’s a heavy sweater.” The dangerous one is a confident number pulled from a wearable that estimated it from heart rate and skin temperature. None of those answers gets you the corner-bottle math right on fight night.

The fix is mechanical, free, and takes one training session to run. A sweat-rate test is a body weight before the session, a body weight after, an accounting of what went in and what came out, and 15 minutes of arithmetic afterwards. The number it produces is the only one that actually drives the in-session fluid plan and the post-weigh-in rehydration math. Camps that skip this step are guessing on the most decisive 24 hours of the fight cycle.

This is the protocol I run with every fighter at least twice per camp — once in early camp, once in heat-acclimated late camp — and the way I use the numbers to dial the cornerman bottle, the cut-day fluid plan, and the post-weigh-in reload.

What you are actually measuring

Sweat rate is liters per hour of fluid lost as sweat during exercise. Sweat sodium concentration is milligrams per liter of sodium leaving the body with the sweat. Multiply the two to get the per-hour sodium loss. Those two numbers — fluid loss rate and sodium loss rate — drive every hydration decision in fight camp.

The numbers vary enormously by athlete. A small lightweight in a temperate room loses 0.6–0.9 L/hour and 200–500 mg sodium per liter. A welterweight in heavy clinch and grappling work in August can lose 2.0–2.5 L/hour and 1,000–1,500 mg sodium per liter. The difference between those two athletes is not 30%. It is 4x in fluid and 6x in sodium. A corner-bottle protocol that works for the first fighter will leave the second in a circulatory hole by round three.

The American College of Sports Medicine and the International Society of Sports Nutrition both publish hydration targets as ranges — 400–800 mL/hour, 300–700 mg sodium/hour — precisely because the individual variability is the dominant signal. The athlete’s actual measured sweat rate is what tells you where in those ranges they sit. Without the test, you are picking a number from the middle of a range that is 2x wide and hoping it lands.

The 60-minute sweat-rate test

The protocol is simple. The fighter needs to run it under conditions that look like a real training session — the right room temperature, the right gear, the right intensity, the right duration. A 60-minute hard sparring round, a 60-minute pad-and-clinch session, or a 60-minute heavy bag and conditioning block are all valid. A 30-minute warm-up jog is not — the intensity is too low and the duration too short to extrapolate cleanly.

Step 1: Pre-session weigh-in. The fighter empties the bladder and bowels, towels off any pre-session sweat, strips to base layer (compression shorts, sports bra if applicable, nothing else), and steps on a digital scale accurate to 0.1 kg. Record the weight in kilograms to one decimal. This is the start weight.

Step 2: Pre-session voiding and fluid baseline. The fighter should arrive normally hydrated — urine color pale yellow, not clear, not amber. If they are coming in already dehydrated from cut work, the test is contaminated. Re-schedule.

Step 3: Run the session. Note the start time. The fighter trains exactly as they would normally train — including drinking the way they would normally drink. Track every milliliter that goes in. The cleanest method is to pre-fill a single water bottle with a known volume (e.g., 750 mL), and re-fill the bottle from a measured jug when it empties. Record the total fluid intake in mL. If they spit out water or rinse-and-spit (which most fighters do), that does not count as intake — only swallowed fluid. Note duration to the nearest minute. If the fighter urinates during the session, weigh the urine output or estimate it (rare in a 60-minute training session, but it happens occasionally with cold weather and high pre-session fluid intake).

Step 4: Post-session weigh-in. The fighter towels off all surface sweat from skin, hair, and base layer. Critical: do NOT change clothes — same base layer, weighed in the same gear minus surface moisture. If the base layer is dripping wet, account for that — either wring it out and weigh dry-side-out, or weigh the same layer in the same wet state both pre and post (less clean, but workable). Record the end weight in kg to one decimal.

Step 5: Do the math.

  • Total fluid loss (L) = (start weight – end weight) + fluid intake (in liters)
  • Sweat rate (L/hour) = total fluid loss × (60 / session minutes)

That is the headline number. The fighter who started at 75.0 kg, finished at 74.0 kg, and drank 0.8 L during a 60-minute session lost 1.0 kg of weight + 0.8 L of intake = 1.8 L of sweat, for a sweat rate of 1.8 L/hour.

Run the test twice in a typical camp — once early, once after heat acclimation is in place. The second test usually shows a higher sweat rate (8–20% increase) and lower per-liter sodium concentration (heat acclimation increases sweat volume and improves sodium re-absorption in the sweat duct). Both numbers matter for the late-camp hydration plan.

Estimating sweat sodium without lab equipment

True sweat-sodium concentration measurement requires a laboratory sweat patch, sweat chloride conductometry, or a sodium-selective electrode — equipment that costs more than most amateur camps can justify. Two practical surrogates get you close enough for camp programming:

Visible salt residue on skin and kit. A fighter who finishes a 60-minute hot session with visible white salt rings on the shirt, the head padding, the brow line, or crystalline residue on the skin is a heavy salty sweater — typical sweat sodium 900–1,500 mg/L. No visible residue, no taste of salt on the lip after a session, indicates a low-to-moderate sweat sodium — typically 300–600 mg/L. The middle case — slight taste of salt, occasional crusting on the edge of the shirt — is the moderate sweater range, 500–900 mg/L.

Self-reported salt cravings and cramp history. Fighters who reach for the salt shaker at every meal, who put extra salt on every food they eat, and who have a history of late-session muscle cramping in heat are almost always high-sodium-loss sweaters. The cramping is the body’s protest at a sodium debt the camp is not refilling.

Pair the residue check with the cramp history and you have a working estimate in three buckets:

  • Low–moderate sweater: 300–600 mg sodium per liter of sweat
  • Moderate sweater: 500–900 mg/L
  • Heavy/salty sweater: 900–1,500 mg/L

The right bucket gets you within ~30% of the actual lab number — close enough for camp programming, and order-of-magnitude better than guessing.

Using the numbers — the cornerman bottle

The cornerman bottle is the single decision the sweat-rate test most directly informs. The standard error camps make is treating the corner-round bottle as a universal handout — same bottle, same volume, same composition for every fighter, every session, every fight. The math says it should not be.

Working formula for the in-session fluid + sodium plan:

  • Fluid replacement: 60–80% of measured sweat rate, in mL/hour. A 1.8 L/hour sweater should drink 1,100–1,400 mL/hour during the session. Higher end if the session is over an hour, lower end if it is short and hard.
  • Sodium replacement: 60–80% of measured per-hour sodium loss. A heavy 1.8 L/hour sweater at 1,200 mg/L is losing 2,160 mg sodium/hour and should be drinking a fluid with roughly 900–1,300 mg sodium per liter.
  • Carbohydrate: 30–60 g/hour during a session over 60 minutes, scaled to intensity. Most sport drinks at 6–8% carbohydrate hit this range at the same fluid volume.

A typical commercial sport drink at 230 mg sodium per 500 mL serving is dosed at 460 mg/L. That works for a low–moderate sweater. It is structurally underdosed for the heavy sweater. The corner mix for the heavy sweater needs an additional 800–1,000 mg of sodium per liter — typically achieved by mixing a sport drink at standard dilution and adding 1/4–1/2 teaspoon of table salt per 500 mL bottle, or by switching to a high-sodium electrolyte formulation dosed for the heavy-sweater bucket.

The cornerman who pours a generic flavored sport drink into a heavy sweater between rounds in August in Vegas is not the cornerman who wins the fifth round.

Using the numbers — the cut-day fluid plan

The same sweat-rate number drives the late-cut session math. The fighter who needs to drop the last 3 kg through sauna and hot-water immersion is going to lose that 3 kg at the rate the sweat-rate test predicts, in conditions hotter than the training session and with the metabolic stress of the cut on top.

Working math for sauna and hot-water cut sessions:

  • Predicted weight loss per 20-minute cycle = sweat rate × (20 / 60) × (heat factor 1.3–1.6). The heat factor accounts for the higher core-temperature stimulus in the sauna or 41°C bath relative to the training-session conditions in which the test was run.
  • Cycle limit: 3 cycles maximum, 20 minutes on and 10–15 minutes off. Beyond 3 cycles the rate of weight loss per minute drops and the risk of hyperthermic decompensation rises sharply.
  • Stop trigger: any of (a) heart rate above 180 in the cycle, (b) gait unsteadiness on the walk out, (c) confusion or impaired speech, (d) cessation of visible sweating. The last is the most dangerous — the sweating-stopped fighter is in real heat-stress trouble and the cut session ends immediately.

A camp running the cut without a sweat-rate baseline is doing the math on a guess. The fighter who is actually a 0.8 L/hour sweater and the camp that thinks they are a 1.5 L/hour sweater will run too many cycles, push too far, and end the cut session with a fighter in worse shape than they need to be. The sweat-rate test prevents this.

Using the numbers — the post-weigh-in rehydration math

The reload after weigh-in is the place the sweat-rate test pays off the most. The fighter who came off the scale 4 kg below walking weight and lost approximately 2.5 kg through the final cut session is in a known fluid deficit. The rehydration plan needs to refill that deficit plus the body’s typical post-cut sodium debt — and the plan to do it has to match the fighter’s tolerance for fluid volume and sodium concentration that the camp learned during the sweat-rate test.

  • The first-hour bolus size. A heavy sweater who tolerated 600 mL/hour during testing tolerates a higher reload bolus than a light sweater who only drank 300 mL/hour without GI complaint. Push past the tested tolerance and you produce the GI distress that is the most common rehydration failure mode.
  • The total sodium target across 24 hours. A heavy sweater carrying a 2,500+ mg/L sweat sodium loss across the cut needs 6,000–9,000 mg of total sodium across the 24-hour reload window to restore plasma sodium and intracellular pools. The light sweater’s reload target is half that.
  • The carb-storage trajectory. Glycogen-bound water deposition runs at a predictable per-hour rate once vascular volume is restored. The fighter who has been through the sweat rate + cut math knows when the body is ready for the next carb push.

What goes wrong without sweat-rate testing

Four failure modes account for most of the bad outcomes I see when camps skip the test.

Underdosed cornerman fluid in a heavy sweater. The fighter takes a 250 mg sodium / 500 mL bottle into a fight where they are losing 1,200 mg sodium per liter. They cramp in round three, they finish the fight on a circulatory deficit, and they go to the post-fight conference looking visibly grey. The fluid was real. The dose was off by a factor of 2–3.

Overdosed cut session in a light sweater. The camp assumes the fighter is going to sweat 1.5 L/hour in the bath and books a 60-minute cut. The fighter actually sweats 0.8 L/hour and the heat stress required to hit the weight target involves pushing the core temperature higher than the camp expected. The fighter wakes up Saturday with a worse cut hangover than the math required.

Underfueled reload in a heavy sweater. The fighter lost 3,000+ mg of sodium across the cut and the corner pours an off-the-shelf sport drink with 460 mg sodium per liter at the reload. Twelve hours later the fighter is still functionally hypovolemic and the cornerman is calling for “more water” instead of more salt.

Generic dosing across the room. Three fighters from the same camp share the same corner mix and the same cornerman bottle, even though one is a 0.7 L/hour light sweater, one is a 1.4 L/hour moderate, and one is a 2.1 L/hour heavy salty sweater. One of them is going to be wrong, and on fight night the cost of being wrong is high.

The protocol in 8 lines

  1. Pre-session weigh in base layer, after voiding. Record kg to 0.1.
  2. Confirm pale-yellow urine pre-session. If amber or clear, reschedule.
  3. Train normally for ~60 minutes. Track fluid intake (mL) and duration.
  4. Towel off surface sweat. Weigh again in same base layer.
  5. Sweat loss (L) = (start kg – end kg) + intake (L).
  6. Sweat rate (L/hour) = sweat loss × (60 / minutes trained).
  7. Estimate sweat sodium bucket from residue + cramp history (300–600 / 500–900 / 900–1,500 mg/L).
  8. Apply the numbers to the cornerman bottle, the cut-day session, and the post-weigh-in reload.

Run the test twice per camp. Re-run after any major weight class move, after any significant climate change (winter camp → summer fight), and any time the cornerman is reporting late-fight cramping that the previous mix did not predict.

The bottom line

The sweat-rate test is the cheapest, simplest, most under-utilized piece of camp programming in combat sports. A scale, a measured water bottle, a stopwatch, and 60 minutes is the entire kit. The number it produces drives the cornerman bottle, the cut session, the reload, and the in-camp hydration plan in ways no wearable estimate or generic sport-drink dose comes close to matching.

The cornermen and head coaches who win the fifth round of close fights are not the ones who happened to grab the right bottle. They are the ones whose camp knew, to the half-liter and the gram of sodium per hour, what their fighter was actually losing — and dosed the bottle to match. That intelligence costs 60 minutes and a notebook. Run it.
