The Pre-Camp Nutrition Audit: 12 Checks to Run in the Week Before Starting a Fight Camp

The fighter walks into the gym on day one of a 10-week camp. He hasn’t weighed himself in three weeks. He thinks he’s “about 5 kg over” the contract number, which usually turns out to be 7 or 8 kg. He’s been eating “pretty clean” for the last two weeks, which means three of seven dinners were takeout. He hasn’t slept seven hours in a row in a month. He’s taking five supplements from the last camp and isn’t sure which ones are still on the list. His last bloodwork was eighteen months ago. The corner asks how the cut is going to look this time, and the fighter says “yeah, should be fine.”
The camp will be fine, eventually. It will also waste two to three weeks of training and recovery quality figuring out the inputs that should have been settled before day one. The fighter who runs a structured pre-camp audit in the seven days before camp starts gets those two or three weeks back. He starts camp with the body composition baseline mapped, the food log calibrated, the supplement stack rationalized, and the cut math already roughed in. The first sparring session is data, not a fishing expedition.
This is the audit I run with fighters in the week before camp opens. Twelve checks, run over five to seven days, none of which require a clinician unless one of them flags something that does. Coaches can run most of it. The fighter can run a lot of it himself if the cues are clear. The output is a one-page sheet that camp week one builds on.
Check 1: Honest weight baseline
Step on the scale every morning of the pre-camp week, post-void, pre-meal, same scale, same clothing or none. Average the seven readings. That number — not the highest, not the lowest — is the camp’s starting weight. Anchoring on a single morning measurement is how fighters convince themselves they’re 3 kg lighter than they actually are; the seven-day average is how the camp’s cut math gets an honest input.
Track the morning weight every day through camp. The trend line over rolling seven-day windows is what matters; daily noise of ±1.5 kg from food, salt, glycogen, and gut content is signal you ignore in favor of the average.
Check 2: Body composition snapshot
Get a body composition measurement before camp starts. DEXA is gold standard if the fighter has access; a Bod Pod, a hydrostatic weigh-in, or a 7-site skinfold by a competent assessor is a credible substitute. Bioimpedance scales are noisy enough at single-measurement resolution that they’re appropriate only for trend tracking, not for camp-start anchoring.
What you’re looking for: total body weight, fat mass, fat-free mass, and the fat mass that’s actually available to cut. A 75 kg fighter at 18% body fat has 13.5 kg of fat mass and a realistic lower bound around 8-9% for a brief race-weight window — that’s roughly 7 kg of fat-cuttable mass without dipping into lean tissue. A 75 kg fighter at 12% body fat has 9 kg of fat mass and a realistic lower bound around 6% — that’s roughly 4.5 kg of fat-cuttable mass. The two fighters cut very differently and the body composition number tells you which one you’re working with.

Check 3: Three-day food log
Have the fighter log everything for three full days, including drinks, supplements, and the “I forgot to mention” snacks. Use a tracker app or a paper log; what matters is honesty, not precision to the gram. The output is a calorie estimate, a macro breakdown, and a list of the foods the fighter actually eats — not the foods he thinks he should.
This is where most weight-cut math goes wrong before camp starts. The fighter says he eats 2,400 kcal/day. The log shows 3,100 kcal/day with two slices of bread and a beer that weren’t in his self-report. The cut math built on the self-report number will fail; the cut math built on the logged number will work.
Check 4: Sleep baseline
Track sleep for seven nights — bedtime, wake time, and sleep latency. A smartwatch or ring is fine for the timestamps; sleep stage data from consumer devices is too noisy to anchor on. What you need is total time in bed, total time asleep, and the consistency of bedtime and wake time across nights.
Average less than 7 hours of sleep across the seven nights, or bedtime variability greater than 90 minutes, or sleep latency consistently above 30 minutes — flag any of these for camp-week-one adjustment. Check 5: Micronutrient and bloodwork pull
The fighter who hasn’t had bloodwork in 12+ months goes for a pre-camp draw. The minimum panel: CBC with differential, comprehensive metabolic panel, ferritin, vitamin D 25-hydroxy, TSH and free T4, and (for male fighters) total testosterone with SHBG. For female fighters add estradiol and the menstrual-cycle context. Order them through the fighter’s primary care or a sports-medicine clinic; many private-pay labs run the full panel for $150-$250.
Why pre-camp and not mid-camp: any iron, vitamin D, or thyroid issue caught in the pre-camp draw gets addressed during the week before camp starts and the intervention is in flight before training load amplifies the underlying problem. Check 6: Supplement stack audit
List every supplement on the shelf. For each one, write three pieces of information: what it’s for, what dose is on the label, and what dose the trial literature supports. The output is a three-bucket sort:
Keep. The supplement has a defensible mechanism, the dose matches the trial literature, and the cost is reasonable. Creatine monohydrate at 3-5 g/day, vitamin D3 if serum 25(OH)D was below 30, fish oil at a documented EPA+DHA dose, magnesium glycinate at 200-400 mg elemental, caffeine in the form and dose the fighter has tested in training. Reassess. The supplement has plausible evidence but the dose on the label is below or above the trial range, or the form is suboptimal. Most multi-ingredient pre-workouts, most “test booster” stacks, most adrenal-support blends. Either find a single-ingredient product at a defensible dose or drop it.
Drop. The supplement is a proprietary blend, a multi-level-marketing product, a “fat burner,” or anything with the words “ultimate,” “elite,” or “stack” in the name. Drop it. Camp is a bad time to test a stack. See supplement red flags.
Check 7: Hydration baseline
Run a one-day urine-color audit. Take a photo of every urine sample on a single rest day, against a white-tile background, in natural light. Compare against a 1-8 urine color chart. Healthy hydration sits at color 1-3 across the day. Above color 3 by mid-afternoon is chronic low-grade dehydration; above color 5 at any point is a real water deficit.
Also weigh in before and after one moderate training session — same day-clothing, same scale. The weight difference (corrected for any fluid intake during the session) is the sweat rate for that session, scaled to that intensity and temperature. Use the number to set the camp’s hydration target. A fighter losing 1.5 kg per session needs to replace 1.5 L per session with intelligent electrolyte support, not “drink when thirsty.”
Check 8: GI tolerance check
Run the foods the camp will lean on. If camp-week fueling will use white rice, sweet potato, oatmeal, lean beef, and Greek yogurt, eat all of them in the pre-camp week and check the GI response. The fighter who finds out in camp week three that oatmeal blows him up is one who didn’t run this check.
Also test the fueling vehicles the camp will use — sport drink, gels, electrolyte powder. The brand and dose tested in training is the brand and dose used on fight night; the brand the corner brings to the corner bag on fight night is the brand the fighter has used for the entire camp. Check 9: Training load math
Pull last camp’s training log. Total weekly sparring rounds, total weekly conditioning sessions, total weekly mat time. Pair it with the bodyweight trajectory, the sleep log, and the subjective fatigue rating for those weeks. The combination is the fighter’s tolerance ceiling for the upcoming camp.
If last camp’s week 6 was 60 sparring rounds plus 5 conditioning sessions and the fighter cratered in week 7, this camp’s week 6 is not 60 sparring rounds and 5 conditioning sessions. Check 10: Weight-cut viability check
Take the day-one weight from check 1 minus the contract weight. That’s the total camp weight loss. Split it into fat loss (camp arc) and water cut (final 5-7 days). A defensible split is no more than 5-7% of bodyweight in the water cut for a healthy adult male; 4-5% for an athlete who is light to begin with; 3-4% for female fighters and for any fighter with a history of poor cut tolerance.
A 75 kg fighter cutting to 70 kg can cut 3.5-5 kg of water in fight week — that leaves 0-1.5 kg of fat to lose across the camp arc, which is a small, slow burn over 10 weeks. Easy.
A 75 kg fighter cutting to 65 kg has 10 kg to lose. The water cut at 5% is 3.25 kg — leaves 6.75 kg of fat to lose across the camp arc. At a defensible 0.5-0.7% bodyweight loss per week, that’s 14-19 weeks of fat cut. Camp is 10 weeks. The math does not work. The fighter either needs a longer runway, a higher walk-around-weight discipline between camps, or a different contract weight. The conversation happens BEFORE camp starts, not in fight week.

Check 11: Recovery window calendar
Map the camp on a calendar. Mark every hard sparring day, every conditioning session, and every planned rest day. Highlight any week with fewer than 1 full rest day, any week with more than 4 hard sessions, and any back-to-back-day pairs where session 2 follows session 1 in less than 16 hours.
Hard sessions stacked too close burn recovery quality. The audit catches the calendar that looks fine at first glance but stacks Tuesday-morning sparring at 8 a.m. against Monday-evening conditioning at 7 p.m. The fix is a calendar tweak, made before camp starts, not a recovery panic in week four.
Check 12: Contract and weigh-in logistics
Read the fight contract. Confirm: weight class, contract weight, weigh-in time, weigh-in location, hydration test if applicable (some promotions impose urine specific gravity at weigh-in; some do not), rehydration window between weigh-in and fight, and the same-day-weigh-in rule for any promotion that uses one. Confirm with the matchmaker if any of it is ambiguous.

A one-page summary the fighter, the coach, and the dietitian all sign off on before day one:

Camp opens with these inputs settled. Re-audit at week 4 mid-camp.
The audit takes seven days of attention from the fighter, a half-day of coach time, and a half-day of dietitian time. The payoff is two to three weeks of camp quality the fighter would otherwise spend figuring out what should have been settled before camp opened.
Common mistakes
Doing the audit in week one of camp instead of the week before. Camp week one is supposed to be the start of the work, not the start of the audit. The audit happens before the camp opens so the camp opens on settled inputs.
Skipping the bloodwork because “it’ll be fine.” Two of three pre-camp bloodwork pulls turn up something the fighter didn’t know about — a low ferritin, a vitamin D below 20, a thyroid drift. The cost of catching it before camp is one week of intervention. The cost of catching it in week six is a wasted camp.
Letting the fighter self-report instead of measuring. Self-reported weight, self-reported food log, self-reported sleep — every one of these is biased toward the version the fighter wants to be true. Measure. The measurements are the audit; the self-report is the conversation.
Cleaning the supplement stack without explaining the cleanup. Drop a fighter’s six-supplement stack to two without telling him why and he buys the dropped ones back three weeks in. Walk him through the trial-dose math for each one. He’ll keep the cleanup if he understands it.
Running the audit and not generating the one-page output. If the audit lives in three different notebooks, two coach texts, and a Strava screenshot, it isn’t an audit. The one-page sheet is the deliverable. Sign it.
The bottom line
The first three weeks of a fight camp are the most expensive weeks to waste. The fighter who walks in with the audit done starts week one on data and starts week four with a half-camp’s worth of progress in the bank. The fighter who walks in cold spends weeks one through three figuring out what the audit would have told him in an afternoon.
Twelve checks. Five to seven days of pre-camp attention. One signed sheet. The camp opens better than it would have, every time.
